US Virgin Islands

The United States Virgin Islands, also called Virgin Islands of the United States is a group of islands in the Caribbean that are an insular area of the United States. The islands are geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles.

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas, along with the much smaller but historically distinct Water Island, and many other surrounding minor islands. The main islands have nicknames often used by locals: "Twin City" (St. Croix), "Rock City" (St. Thomas), "Love City" (St. John), and "Small City" (Water Island).[2]

The total land area of the territory is 133.73 square miles (346.4 km2). As of the 2000 census the population was 108,612.[3]

St. Croix

Cane Bay Beach
Located on North Shore Road, Cane Bay Beach offers a wide sandy beach with moderate surf, great diving and snorkeling. A full-service dive shop, along with the hotels and restaurants nearby, make this a great place to hang out.
Chenay Bay Beach
Home to a hotel with the same name, this cozy beach is open to the public. Windsurfers, snorkel gear, kayaks and sunfish rentals are available. There is also a beachside bar, restaurant and children’s playground.
Columbus Landing/Salt River Bay National Historic Park
This beach is named after Christopher Columbus, who landed here during his second voyage in 1493. Here Columbus encountered a Carib Indian tribe, leading to the first documented conflict between Native Americans and Europeans. Today the area is a protected national park.
Cramer's Park
A great beach that’s very popular with residents on weekends for family picnics, parties and camping.
Davis Bay
A long, sandy white beach, located at the Carambola Beach Resort, Davis Bay is quiet and serene. If surf conditions are right, visitors can body surf. Otherwise, hammocks provide a comfortable spot to meditate.
Dorsch Beach
A pretty little beach located a short distance from Frederiksted, Dorsch Beach is a popular spot on weekends for family picnics and gatherings.
Fort Frederik Beach/Frederiksted Beach
Known by residents as Frederiksted Beach, Fort Frederik Beach is walking distance from Frederiksted and the Ann E. Abramson Pier. It is also a popular evening spot, both for fishing and sunset watching.
Grape Tree Beach/Divi Beach
Grape Tree Beach is a long, lovely, white sand beach extending both east and west past Divi Carina Beach Resort.
Manchenil (Hay Penny Beach)
Manchenil is a very long, white sand beach on the south side of St. Croix, accessible by a dirt road. Look for the pink pillars off South Shore Rd. The beach is mostly deserted during the week, but is popular on weekends with island residents.
Mermaid Beach
Mermaid Beach is a spectacular white sand beach located at the Buccaneer Resort. For those seeking refuge from the bright Caribbean sun, the shore is shaded with tall coconut trees. A beach bar and open-air restaurant are located a short distance from the sandy beachfront. For non-hotel guests, a fee is collected for parking on the hotel grounds.

St. John

The beauty of St. John’s beaches is legendary.
Cinnamon Bay
This beach offers plenty of watersport activities, including snorkeling, windsurfing and kayaking. Explore the old beachfront Danish building, a temporary museum for the National Park Service’s archaeological excavation in the area or wander the self-guided half-mile loop Cinnamon Bay trail.
Francis Bay
A calm and secluded spot just past a salt pond, Francis Bay is accessible either by car or scenic hiking trail.
Hawksnest Beach
One of St. John’s most beautiful and convenient beaches, Hawksnest Beach offers plenty of parking, picnic tables and barbecue grills. A great snorkeling reef starts a few yards from the shore.
Honeymoon Beach
Accessible by boat and hiking trail, Honeymoon Beach offers great snorkeling and calm shallow waters.
Jumbie Bay
This small jewel of a bay is located on the north shore of the island and accessed by a set of steps from the main road.
Leinster Bay
Adjacent to the Annaberg Ruins, this quiet bay is popular with boaters and snorkelers. Look out for turtles, starfish and stingrays while snorkeling out to Waterlemon Cay, a small spit at the mouth of the bay.
Maho Bay
Known for its calm and shallow water, Maho Bay is popular with families, locals and boaters.
Salt Pond Bay
This scenic bay on St. John’s south shore offers a secluded beach with good swimming and snorkeling. There are several hiking trails, one of which leads to a salt pond.
Trunk Bay
This breathtakingly beautiful beach, with soft white powdery sand, is one of the most popular in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The National Park maintains an underwater snorkeling trail at Trunk Bay with underwater signs providing a wealth of interesting information.

St. Thomas

Bolongo Bay
Located on the south shore of the island at the Bolongo Beach Resort, this beach offers a variety of watersports and beach toy rentals.
Brewer’s Bay
Located near the University of the Virgin Islands campus, Brewer’s Bay is a family favorite for weekend picnics and gatherings. Visitors can relax in the shallow waters or sunbathe on the wide shore.
Coki Beach
Located on Coki Point, this white sand beach with crystal clear water offers excellent snorkeling and diving. Beachside eateries serve picnic table fare including burgers, sandwiches and some local dishes. There is a dive shop, jet ski rental and several vendors renting snorkel gear, beach chairs and floats. Right next to Coral World Ocean Park, it’s easy to make a day of visiting both attractions.
Hull Bay
A favorite beach for local fishermen, families and surfers. It offers the best surfing on St. Thomas when there is a north swell. Located on the north side, west of Magens Bay. Lindbergh BayNamed after the famous aviator who landed nearby in 1928, this tranquil bay is flanked by three hotels, palm trees and sea grapes that line the shore.
Lindquist Beach
One of St. Thomas's most beautiful and pristine beaches, Lindquist Beach is situated on the east end of the island. The water is crystal-clear and typically calm. The left side of the beach is great for snorkeling.
Magens Bay
St. Thomas's most popular beach, this beautiful one-mile stretch is a public park and was donated to the people of the Virgin Islands by Arthur Fairchild. The water is usually very calm in this heart-shaped protected bay. Beach chairs and floats are available for rent and burgers, pizzas and other snacks can be found at the snack bar. Lifeguards are on duty every day. Morning Star BeachLocated at the Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Resort, this beach offers a restaurant and bar, watersports rentals and a scenic view of the cruise ships sailing through the harbor.
Sapphire Beach
The sapphire-blue waters here are great for snorkeling, windsurfing, jet skiing and more. The beach is located on the east end at Sapphire Beach Resort.
Secret Harbour Beach
A calm, quiet beach located at Secret Harbour Beach Resort, this beach has a floating swim platform and beach chairs available for rent.
